Sell the Potential Profit
Last week, we covered Flippa's advice on optimizing your website value. As a follow up on this theme, Kyle Kroeger has put a different spin on preparing your website for sale.
At the outset, Kroeger suggests you should value your site based on its long-term revenue.
Most of us look at a site and base its value on a multiple of monthly revenue, but Kroeger says you can charge more according to the long-term profit it will bring to a new owner.
There are 5 tips in this article, including adding useful UX elements and providing meaningful statistics.
The section that intrigued us most was Kroeger's take on research methods.
He states:
While preparing to sell your website, you should conduct thorough research regarding your target audience and competitor websites.
How many of you do that?
You'll find several other tips to improve your flipping strategy and sell it for a better price when you’re ready to move on.
🔔 Ding, Ding, Round Three
In case you're one of the few website owners who hasn't seen this, Google just announced a new core update for December, 2020.
This is the third algorithm update released this year and it began rolling out on December 3rd. Apparently, it will take roughly two weeks to fully roll out.
While these updates are developed to make the search experience easier for users, one thing that’s certain is there will be a noticeable impact. Broad core updates are designed to produce wide effects across search results.
The visibility of your site may be impacted, and many sites will inevitably notice drops or gains in search rankings.
Google has previously offered a list of things to consider and some advice on what to do if you are negatively impacted by a core update. You'll find that information here.
🚅 Grow a Site Faster
Last week, Spencer Haws from Niche Pursuits sat down with website investor, Jared Bauman to talk about building and growing websites.
Jared recently purchased an existing site from MotionInvest.com and grew it 5x in just 7 months. The site was earning around $200 a month back then and is bringing in over $1,000 a month now.
Jared covers all his strategies for success, including his criteria for website purchases and the exact process he follows once he's bought a site.
If you'd rather read Jared's story, (or listen to the podcast) then this article contains what you need. It also shows screenshots of the results he's achieved with his latest site.
🔎 Find a Buyer and Negotiate Better
Here's a slightly different perspective on selling an online business from entrepreneur and writer, Jovan Cicmil.
We came across his article by accident, but it offers several great insights into finding prospective buyers and negotiating a sale.
Cicmil built an online company from the ground up, ran it for a few years, and eventually sold it to a larger competitor.
He says:
Knowing when to sell and how to conduct the process is just as important a step in the lifecycle of a business as any other.
You may find a useful tip to keep in mind when you're selling your next site.
